What to Do When Your Luggage Goes Missing

Yesterday we covered how to reduce the chances of lost luggage. Today we dive into battle-tested strategies for when that nightmare actually happens. From mindset hacks to high-tech trackers, here’s everything I’ve learned the hard way.

According to ThePointsGuy.com, roughly 7 out of every 1,000 checked bags on US airlines goes missing each year. Apparently, I am above average.

Master Your Mindset

Travel delays and mishaps are out of your control—but your reaction isn’t.

Arrive at baggage claim ready to stay calm and collected. Support agents are there to help, not to blame. Avoid accusatory language like “your airline”—it only raises defenses. A friendly tone goes a long way toward faster, more helpful service.

Leverage Tracking Tools

Modern technology can be your best ally in locating runaway baggage.

  • Check the airline’s mobile app for last-scan details.

  • Have your baggage-tag receipt handy (keep it in your passport holder).

  • Slip an AirTag or Bluetooth tracker inside a hidden pocket. Taping it beneath the liner keeps it discreet and ensures you can pinpoint your bag’s whereabouts.

Pack an Emergency Kit in Your Carry-On

Don’t let a missing bag strand you without essentials.

  • Two days’ worth of clothing—undergarments, a top, and a swimsuit—easily fits in a carry-on.

  • Stash medications, chargers, and valuables (camera gear, laptops) in your personal item.

  • Include a small toiletry kit so you can freshen up without hunting down a store.

  • A hotel room sink and alter as a washing machine if needed.

Make Your Bag Instantly Recognizable

Stand out on the carousel and deter thieves.

  • Tie a brightly colored ribbon or luggage strap around the handle with a secure knot. This helps you spot your bag on the carousel, or in the hands of someone waking away.

  • Snap a photo of your checked suitcase alongside your carry-on. When words fail—especially in a foreign language—you can simply show the image.

File a Detailed Report Before You Leave

Never step away from baggage claim without officially reporting your missing luggage.

  • Find the airline’s baggage service desk and complete a Property Irregularity Report (PIR).

  • Provide flight numbers, bag description, and your contact information.

  • Share your hotel’s name, address, and check-in/check-out dates. Ask the hotel to notify you immediately upon delivery.

Stay On Top of the Claims Process

Airline reimbursement rules lean in their favor, so be thorough.

  • Keep all documentation: PIR form copy, baggage-tag receipt, and any incident numbers.

  • Save receipts for emergency purchases—airlines often reimburse a portion of expenses.

  • Follow up regularly via email or the airline’s app until your bag is returned or you receive a final settlement.

Turning a Setback into a Story

Lost luggage doesn’t have to ruin your adventure. With preparation, the right attitude, and some simple tech, it can become just another travel tale. Do you have battle-tested tips for reclaiming runaway bags? Share your tricks in the comments below!
