Updated information. New meet up location below.
The Salt River horses are a free-roaming herd of wild horses that live along the Lower Salt River in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest, near Phoenix. Known for their striking beauty and graceful movements through the desert landscape, they have become an iconic symbol of the American Southwest.
The focus on this fan meet up will be to enjoy photographing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat in the soft morning light. We will start at the Coon Bluff Recreation Area at 7:00 am. We will do a half mile hike to a location that I’ve viewed the horses several times. If we do not see any horses by 9:00 am, we will move on to the Pebble Beach Recreation Area, and then the Water Users Recreation Site.
You will need an America the Beautiful pass or Tonto pass. You can purchase the Tonto Pass online at Tonto National Forest | Passes | Forest Service.
At the end of the meetup, I’ll be making some wilderness coffee and showing you a preview of the largest project that I have ever done on YouTube. Bring your camera, and a chair. Expect to be out in cold temps so check the weather and dress appropriately. There will be a lot of horse manure. You may want to bring an extra pair of shoes.
